Rusty has arrived at Spirit Animal Sanctuary!
We want to thank everyone who helped by contributing to help get Rusty to his safe haven at Spirit Sanctuary.<span> Rusty is a dog that needs more than many can offer him. Though he is a special little guy, we had not many options for him, which is were Spirit Sanctuary came in. Spirit is an environment where dogs thrive. They are allowed to be dogs. When we arrived in Boonville, NY, where Spirit is located, our first thought was, "who would want to live here!?" It snows just about every day, and gets the most snow in the continental US, as well as being mostly farm land. Again, I asked myself, who would want to live here? Someone who loves dogs, and has dedicated their life to them. Alan Papszycki, founding director of Spirit Animal Sanctuary, has personally saved the lives of approximately 500 dogs, Rusty being one of them. The first thing Alan did when he met Rusty, was get down on his knees in the snow and started playing with him and pet him. Any worry that I had, quickly disappeared. To see the way Alan interacted with Rusty, and to see Rusty bond with and trust him immediately, brought tears to my eyes. Alan is one of the most patient, understanding, knowledgeable, and amazing people I have ever met. It is a breath of fresh air to meet someone with such experience and understanding of dogs and their behavior. His love for animals is clear when having a conversation with Alan. Just about the whole time we were talking, Rusty and Alan were playing tug of war. Alan rough housed and laughed with Rusty, even when Rusty peed on him! I have never seen Rusty so happy. When arriving at Spirit, I was in awe. A pack of well behaved, happy, well fed, and quiet dogs. It is beautiful to see dogs in an element where they can be dogs. Some dogs were playing, some were chewing bones, one was digging in the snow for a good 20 minutes and having a blast. And the most surprising to me, was Rusty. He was on his absolute best behavior, like he knew he in a good place. When we left Rusty, he gave me a quick good-bye, then focused right back on Alan. They walked away, with Rusty staring up at Alan with a look of, "what fun are we going to get into next?"Rusty is now in the hands of someone who will take amazing care of him, as well as understand him. He is going to thrive and live a very happy life.Spirit Animal Sanctuary and Alan are true blessings to animals, like Rusty. Alan's pure selflessness and dedication to these animals is a rarity, as well as his knowledge, experience, and kindness. I am honored to have met such a phenomenal person, with such an amazing heart, and Rusty is a lucky guy to be able to live his life with him. Again, thank you to everyone who has helped get Rusty to a place where he will be safe and happy. Updates to follow!
